Just similar to the authors experience, for many years we had to sit by, seeing my father breathe hard at first, then cough a lot, and eventually die from lung and heart trouble. He has been away from us for almost ten years.As we know, cigarette smoking is a dangerous

    4、 habit because it causes health problems. Doctors say it can be a direct cause of cancer of the lungs and throat and can also contribute to cancer of other organs. In addition, it can bring about other health problems such as heart and lung disease. It is clearly identified as one of the chief cause

    5、 of death in our society. Smoking is a killer not only among smokers, but also the nearby nonsmokers. The nonsmokers often find themselves exposed to second-hand smoke. This will add to the deaths from cancer and disease related to smoking.For the sake of public health, its time to take actions to e

    6、liminate this bad custom. Before we succeed in persuading smokers to give up the habit, we should at least set up “no smoking” zones, and prohibit smoking in public places.Structure analysis:The author narrates to the reader the stories of her daughter and her father in first person, which makes the

    7、 narration more vivid and convincing. The whole passage consists of three parts: the authors worries about her daughters smoking; the authors painful experiences with her fathers smoking; and the authors earnest appeal to the smokers like her daughter to give up smoking. During her narration, time s

    8、equence is adopted to make it clear and smooth. Besides, the device of cause and effect is used to help people have a strong feeling of the harm smoking does.     9、countries. Part IV (para7-8) The authors feeling as a mother and her view on smoking.Main idea:When seeing her daughter smoke heavily, the author as a mother can do nothing but weep. Her weeping is attributed to a bitter lesson she learned from her painful experiences with her fathers smoking. Throu

    10、gh years she had to sit by, seeing her father breathe hard at first, then cough a lot, and eventually die from lung trouble. So she feels deeply hurt to watch many people like her daughter following in her fathers steps. She hopes her fathers fate will be a lesson to all.1. Who are the characters in

    11、 this story? What is their relationship to each other? As the story reveals to us, there are three major characters the mother, her father and her daughter. The mother felt sorry for her father because she witnessed him suffer and die from smoking. Her bitter and painful experiences with her fathers

    12、 smoking habit have taught herself a good lesson. Thats why she feels deeply hurt to see her daughter smoking the same kind of cigarette that killed her grandfather. The mother never hopes that her daughter will follow in her grandfathers footsteps, but hopes that her fathers fate will serve as a wa

    13、rning to her daughter.2. What are the effects of smoking?Smoking does us more harm than we thought. In the first place, smoking is a form of self-battering. For example, smoking as few as one to four cigarettes a day may increase the smokers risk of heart attack by two to three times. The habit can

    14、also lead to stroke and several kinds of cancers. If todays smoking patterns do not change, as a research predicts, 300 million Chinese alive today will die prematurely from tobacco-related diseases. In the second, smoking may form a fatal threat to the smokers beloved. According to recent studies,

    15、women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to experience bleeding or spontaneous abortion.3. What does “victory” mean in this story?The word “victory” is used here ironically. As the passage shows, tobacco advertising and film actors won over many people like the authors father, who was hopele

    16、ssly hooked by cigarettes. So from the viewpoint of the tobacco company, this seemed a great success because more people smoking will definitely bring it more profit. But from the viewpoint of the family, the authors father was nothing but a victim of tobacco industry. The prosperous owners of the t

    17、obacco industries have won a victory in her family, but her family has paid a bigger price her father died from smoking. The author believes one such victim is enough.
