11、search Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.” In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate prof
12、essor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a b
13、etter coffee shop experience. “Its not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband, ”says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral(边缘的) members of our social network matter for our wellbeing also.” Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater
14、 sense of belonging, a bond with others. Only the females bite, to acquire protein to make their eggs. But blood can also serve as a refreshing drink on a hot, dry day. A new study finds that dehydr
18、ated(脱水的) mosquitoes are more aggressive, land more often on hosts and feed more frequently than those with ready access to water. “This may also increase the spread of disease,” says Joshua Benoit, a biologist at the University of Cincinnati and senior author of the study, published in May in Scien
19、tific Reports. Because some mosquitoes lay their eggs on water, researchers have long thought that wetter conditions lead to more mosquitoborne illnesses. Yet recent studies have suggested at the opposite, linking increased transmission of diseases to droughts. Benoit and his colleagues discovery he
20、lps to resolve these contrary into common sense. “Its not just as simple as saying. If its wet, there will be more mosquitoes and more disease transmission,” Benoit says. His laboratory became interested in the effect of dehydration on mosquitoes feeding behavior by accident: a worker dropped a cont
21、ainer of thirsty mosquitoes and noticed that they divebombed him with much greater energy than usual. The researchers studied three mosquito species that transmit yellow fever. They exposed these mosquitoes to different temperatures and humidity(温度) levels in cages with or without access to water an
