7、question:the use of chemicals in the recent fight against SARS.Frequently we have come across the stories of people applying chemicals to an excessive degree out of panic and fear,which ironically pollutes their environment.Besides this fear for ones health,there may be some other motives for applyi
8、ng chemicals excessively.Have there been any problems with the use of chemicals in the environment of your own area?Describe them.How do local citizens feel about these problems?Tips:As Carson has used contrast in this article,you may report the environmental problems in your own area by the method
9、of contrast.For this purpose,you had better focus on the harms of one kind of chemical only.Despite all the harms they might bring about,could we live a life without chemicals?Tips:Chemicals are widely used to preserve food,to kill pests,to purify the tap water etc.But they are also widely used in g
10、rowing vegetables and fruits,which may well pollute the plant itself while destroying the targeted weeds or pests.A possible conclusion may be it is a necessary evil.At present lets hope that an appropriate use of them may make our life more comfortable and colorful with a minimum degree of harms.Wh

12、ing a big fine from the factories,which cast away hazardous chemical waste in an unauthorized location.About the Author Rachel Carson(1907 1964):is an American biologist well known for her writings on environmental pollution and the natural history of the Sea.In 1951,she published The Sea Around Us,
13、which won the National Book Award.Her prophetic book Silent Spring(1962)created a worldwide awareness of the dangers of environmental pollution.Among her other works are Under the Sea-wind(1941)and The Age of the Sea.The origin of the articleThis fable was taken from Carsons prophetic book:Silent Sp
14、ring(1962),which was an expose of the long-term effects of pesticides upon our environment.She argued that we had entered the age of chemicals willy-nilly without considering the totality of nature.Processes within nature were working to undo the very things we hoped to achieve using pesticides,ther
15、eby causing large-scale imbalances.In fine,she urged us to better understand nature and to use its processes to our advantage without the use of pesticides.Rev.John E.Gibbons pointed out in his sermon:Always,Rachel,the writer was much refuted when the book first came out.The Time Magazine ridiculed
