Soon Connors muscles began to
9、 lose strength. At three he showed signs of upper-body weakness, by five he couldnt hold his head upright, and by the first grade, he would need a wheelchair. As the day passed, he tired and couldnt hold a pencil to write. Within two years, he would be too tired to feed himself dinner. Everyone was
10、puzzled. Physically, his body was twisted, but he was mentally perfect. We ran tests after tests, but no definite answer.Finally, in 2004, we consulted Dr. Shawn, a geneticist, who said that Connors symptoms had signs of dystonia (肌张力障碍),a very rare genetic disorder, and a possible cure was L-dopa.
11、Though there waspossible side effects of the treatment, when Connors condition worsened, I had littlechoice.Dr. Jacobs, a neurologist (神经学家), gave Connor the first dose (次剂量的药) on June 21, 2007, when he was nine years old.
