    2、w did the pagoda come into being?What are the most remarkable pagodas in Hangzhou?Hello,everyone.Now we are heading for Six Harmonies Pagoda on the northern shore of Qiantang River,south of West Lake.Do you know the origin of the pagoda in China?It must be related with Buddhism,isnt it?Yes,the pagod

    3、a evolves(发展)from the stupa(印度塔,浮屠)in ancient India,originally meaning“tomb.”It used to house the Buddhist relics(佛舍利)and sutras or scriptures(佛经)in a temple.According to the Buddhist sutra,about 2500 years ago,the remains of the Buddha Sakyamuni turned into crystals(结晶体)including 84,000 shiny pearl

    4、-like beads in different colors after the cremation(火葬)and thus are known as Sariras(舍利)or Buddhist relics.Yes.Every part of the Buddhas body is said to have turned into sariras including his bones,teeth and even his hair.Pardon?How many beads altogether?You said 84,000?Yes,its really amazing.Its sa

    5、id that his hair finally turned into fleshy protuberance(肉凸,肉髻)after becoming the Buddha.Even his hair?Why?Its unbelievable.Its the consequence of the cultivation(修行)of Sakyamuni with perfect virtue(功德圆满),for its not possible for a common person to have the sariras after cremation except for Buddhas

    6、,Bodhisattvas,arhats and the eminent monks(高僧).The Buddhist relics were then separated into eight parts and kept in eight pagodas respectively by eight kings in India.Its not until about 200 years later that the great king Ashoka(阿育王),a devout Buddhist(虔诚的佛教徒),had 84,000 pagodas rebuilt to enshrine(

    7、珍藏,供奉)and venerate(敬仰)each piece of all the Buddhist relics.With the introduction of Buddhism to China in the first century,pagodas were thus introduced to China to preserve some of the Buddhist relics.Nowadays,the Buddhist relics are found in eight places in China including Leifeng Pagoda(雷峰塔)in Ha

    8、ngzhou.Leifeng Pagoda towers on Xizhao Hill(Sunset Hill,夕照山)to the south of West Lake.It was first erected(建立)in 977 by Qian Chu(钱俶,929-988),the last king of Wuyue Kingdom,to house the Buddhas hair Sarira(佛螺髻舍利)together with Buddhist scriptures and to commemorate(纪念)the birth of his son as well.黄妃塔

    9、Over almost a thousand years,it hardly survived fires,wars and other damage,and was only left to be the tower core made of bricks.砖质塔芯 It finally fell down in 1924 because many local people had taken away the bricks from the remaining tower core for use as talismans(避邪物).The present one was rebuilt

    10、in 2002,and you can see it quite closely when passing it by very soon.Facing Leifeng Pagoda,its twin pagoda stands on the opposite side of West Lake.Thats Baochu Pagoda(Blessing Chu Pagoda,保俶塔)on Baoshi Hill(Precious Stone Hill,宝石山).It was built around 948-960 in the hope of blessing King Qian Chu(钱

    11、俶)so that he could come back safe and sound after having been summoned(召见)by the emperor to the capital Kaifeng(开封).Both Leifeng Pagoda and Baochu Pagoda are noted as the landmarks of Hangzhou thanks to their unique silhouettes(轮廓)in the sunglow.The original dilapidated(破败不堪的)Leifeng Pagoda used to
