Scientists set some wi

    23、ld birds a series of testssome with traffic noise and others without. They found that the sound of passing cars harmed the birds ability to find food. The results suggest that noise pollution has previously unknown consequences for wild creatures. Prof Christopher Templeton from Pacific University i

    24、n Oregon, US, led the study. He carried it out in a laboratory. Researchers set the bird tasks both in a quiet setting and a noisy setting with a record of road traffic. Prof Templeton explained that just hearing a car drive by was enough to affect their performance. One task involved getting food f

    25、rom some lids that the birds had to turn over to reveal the reward. In another test, the birds had to work out the way into a pipe that had a piece of food inside. Professor Templeton said they were almost twice as likely to do the tasks correctly if they dont hear traffic noise. There is more evide

    26、nce that human-made noise has a variety of negative effects on wildlife. Its getting really difficult to find totally quiet environments not touched by human noise. But we can change road surfaces, or think about redesigning a vehicles tires. Theres great possibility for trying to reduce noise. 2020
