He stayed in Asia for about eight years, taking part in the conquest of the city of Malacca, Malaysia. After returning to Portugal,
19、 he found that no one wanted to employ him, so he offered his services to the king of Spain, setting out an ambitious plan to reach the Spice Islands of Indonesia by sailing west instead of eastsomething which had never been done before.
