Before reading: 1、Guess what we will talk about according to the video? 2、Do you know something about April Fools Day? Activitives: * Play jokes * Spread hoaxes Date: April 1st While reading: 1、Fast reading: 1) Match each paragraph with the main idea. paragraph1 The most famous trick played paragraph2 Examples of funny stories that happened on April Fools Day paragraph3 An introduction to April Fools Day paragraph4 A sad story that happened on April Fools Day While reading: 2、Careful reading: 1) Read the passage again and answer the questions. 1.Why did the supermarkets run out of spaghetti one April Fools Day? Because a reporter in England announced that there would be no more spaghetti because the spaghetti farmers in Italy had stopped growing spaghetti. 2. What did the TV show say the special water could do? It was said that this water would help people lose weight . 3. Why did the TV stars joke have a bad ending? He lost both his girlfriend and his show. 4. When did Orson Welles tell people about aliens from Mars landing on the earth? It was in October 1938. 5. Why did so many people believe Orson Welles? Orson Welles made it sound so real that hundreds of people believed the story. 6. Which of these stories is the most believable?Which is the least believable? Why? Answers will vary. 7. Would you be fooled by any of these stories? Answers will vary. While reading: 2) Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the verbs in brackets. Answers : 1.appeard, rushed 2.found out, had disappeared 3.ended, had called 4.ended, had lost 5.told, had run away After reading:Groupwork: 1. Work in groups and find out the important words. After that, group leader explain these words. 1. ., all the spaghetti across the country had been sold out. sell out 卖完;售完;出售 The next day the bookshops sold out. 第二天书店就卖断了货。 Language points John is going to marry Jane. 约翰要和简结婚了。 2. The lady was so happy because she really wanted to get married. marry v. “嫁,娶,结婚” marry sb. 表示“嫁给某人” 、 “娶了某人”或 “和某人结婚” get/be married to sb. The scientist ended up his speech at last. 那个科学家最后结束了演讲。 3. Many April Fools jokes may end up being not very funny. end up (doing sth.)(以)结束; 最终 成为; 最后处于 end up sth. 表示“结束某事” end up with sth.
