Robben Island in South Africa This island was used through the centuries as a prison,a hospital and a military base. But its probably most famous as a maximumsecurity prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century. Nelson Mandela was one of its most famous residents. The WHL says it represents “the victory of democracy (民主) and freedom over oppression and racism (种族主义)” Borders of France and Spain This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations. But it is also an area of small farms. People there still use a type of agriculture that used to be common in mountainous areas of Europe but has almost completely disappeared in modern times. The city of Brasilia ,Brazil Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it “a landmark in the history of town planning”. The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time carefully. Every part of the city shows the ideas of the planner and architect(建筑师) Simien National Park ,Ethiopia Simien National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978. He was just about to start his weekend with an alcoholic drink called a margarita and a dip in his hot tub when he heard sticks breaking and leaves moving in his backyard. At first, he thought the sounds were coming from his neighbor. But then, the noise grew louder.“So I got up, looked over in the bushes and there was a bear climbing up over my fence, ” Hough said. After seeing the bear, Hough decided to go back into his home for safety reasons. When Hough looked outside a short time later, the bear had made himself at home in Houghs backyard. The bear had entered Houghs unheated hot tub. “He was playing, having a grand old time, ” Hough said. He found his phone and began recording video of the bears activities. After a few minutes of pool time, the bear got out and walked slowly around the yard. Then it made its way over to Houghs margarita. The bear pushed the drink over and drank it off the ground. Later in the day, Hough was talking to a neighbour when some tree leaves fell to the ground. Hough looked up to see the bear sleeping in the tree. “So he had his margarita, and now hes ready for an hour nap, ” Hough said. Houghs video of the bears relaxing afternoon has been a hit on social media. One Twitter user said the bear is “clearly having a better summer than you”. Other users called the bear a “summer hero”. One called it her“spirit animal”. And one local news station in Iowa suggested the bears activities would be a great way to celebrate Americas Independence Day. 24Why did Mark Hough decide to return to his home? C The Forbidden City is well known for being full of Chinese cultural and historical relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City (我在故宫修 文物) does not just focus on the stories of the past. Instead, the documentary film, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec. 16, focuses on ordinary peoplethe restorers (做修复工作的人) of relics and antiquities (古董) The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be timeconsuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast. “If you choose this job, you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet, ” says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert. A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship (工 艺) in the restorers. “Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit, ” China Daily commented. “Looking for precision and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance (忍耐力), loneliness. All these qualities come from thecraftsman spirit ” But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work. One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says, “The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing dynasty.” Masters in the Forbidden City has proved many peoples ideas about antique restorers wrong, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye. 28According to the text, whats the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City? ATo show people how antiques are restored. BTo display relics seldom seen by ordinary people. CTo draw attention to Chinese antique restorers lives. DTo praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers. 29According to Wang Jin, we can learn that _. Ahe often gets tired of his work Bthere is no need to do restoration work fast Cantique restorers need to be patient and peaceful Dit takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration 30The underlined word “humdrum” probably means _. Aboring Bdifferent Crelaxing Dunusual 31The bicycleriding scene in the documentary is used to _. Aremind the audience of the last Qing emperor Bshow the strange hobbies of young antique restorers Cencourage the young consider a career in antique restoration in the future Dbreak the old, dull image of antique restorers D A new study shows that rising levels of planetwarming gases may reduce important nutrients (营养物) in food crops. Researchers studied the effects of carbon dioxide on rice. In the experiment, scientists grew 18 kinds of rice in fields in China and Japan. They set carbon dioxide levels to what scientists are predicting for our planet by the end of the century. Rice grown under high carbon dioxide conditions had, on average, 13 to 30 percent lower levels of four B vitamins and 10 percent less protein (蛋白质). The crops also had 8 percent less iron and 5 percent less zinc than rice grown under normal conditions. However, vitamin E levels increased by about 13 percent on average. The researchers said the effects of planetwarming gases would be most severe for the poorest citizens in some of the least developed countries. These people generally eat the most rice and have the least complex diets. That includes about 600 million people in Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Laos and other nations, mainly in Southeast Asia. Other studies have shown that higher temperatures from climate change and weather extremes will reduce food production. And scientists are finding that rising levels of carbon dioxide and other planetwarming gases threaten food quality. Earlier studies showed that wheat, rice, field peas and soybeans grown under high carbon dioxide conditions all had lower levels of protein and minerals. Scientists predicted that almost 150 million people might be at risk of having too little protein or zinc in their diet by 2050. The new study suggests a way to lower the nutritional harm of climate change. That is to grow different forms of rice that can adapt to higher carbon dioxide levels. 32Growing rice under high carbon dioxide conditions may _. Aincrease iron in the rice Bmake it less nutritious Ccause losses of vitamin E Dmake it more delicious 33How can people reduce the nutritional harm of climate change? ABy importing rice from China and Japan. BBy taking other kinds of food instead of rice. CBy avoiding eating rice from Southeast Asia. DBy growing rice suitable for the environment. 34Whats the authors purpose of writing the text? ATo inform readers what nutrients food crops contain. BTo call on people to care for the planet they live on. CTo share the results of some studies on peoples diets. DTo tell readers where food crops are mainly produced. 35In which part of a magazine can you read the text? AAdvertisements. BArt and culture. CScience reports.
