His nonprofit has since moved three mi
9、llion pounds of produce from farms in eastern Washington to the western part of the state for distribution to hundreds of food banks and meal programs. “I know these people that I grew up with on one hand, and on the other hand I know there is a need here; Im just going to connect the two dots,” sai
10、d Ahearn, 45, who now lives in Bothell, Washington. He started by calling local food banks who said they would be glad to take some of the produce that would otherwise go to waste. But when he called the farmers, they wanted to give him truck loads of potatoes and onionsmore than Ahearns car could h
11、andle. He also had another problem; food banks needed the potatoes and onions to be cleaned and bagged before donation (捐赠). “What I didnt realize was the logistical nightmare because I thought I could just show up with potatoes harvested straight from the ground and give them right to the food bank
12、. I couldnt believe it.” So,Ahearn put out a call for help on Facebook. Thats how he connected with his two co-founders, Nancy Balin and Zsofia Pasztor. While Balin helped organize the convoy (运输) to drive across Washington to pick up the produce, Pasztor assembled volunteers to clean and bag the fo
13、od, which was then distributed through connections at her another nonprofit Farmer Frog. Since May, EastWest Food Rescue has grown the size of its operations and convoys. 19、 the study, five squirrels were given a task identical to one they had tried 22 months earlier, in which they had to press levers to get hazelnuts. In that first experience, the squirrels improved with practicetaking an average of eight seconds on their first attempt and just two seconds by the fina
20、l time they tried it. Trying again for the first time in 22 months, they took an average of just three seconds to get a hazelnut. Previous research at Exeter has shown that their memory for the locations of hidden nuts is excellent,said co-author Professor Stephen Lea, of the University of Exeter. “
21、But the new research demonstrates a very different form of memory. This is not just remembering where things have been left, it shows they can recall techniques which they have not used for a long time,he said. When presented with a version of the task that looked different but required the same tec
22、hnique to get hazelnuts, the squirrels showed a neophobic” (fear of new things ) response hesitating for more than 20 seconds on average before starting the task. But once they started it took them just two seconds on average to get a hazelnut, showing that they were able to recall and apply the tec
