    13、nd short-story writer who came to literary prominence following the First World War, as a member of the so called “Lost Generation ”in the 1920s. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He had an understated prose style and a restrained method of exposition, which he termed the “ iceberg theor

    14、y”(because he believed that a great deal could be understood in a narration even if it was deliberately unmentioned). The American author, Ernest Hemi

    19、ngway, born in 1899, was from early boyhood single- minded in his ambition to write. ” I decided that I would write one story about each thing that I knew about.” Having set himself this goal, he wrote novels and short stories based on his personal experiences of the First World War, the Spanish Civ

    20、il War, bullfighting and deep-sea fishing , amongst others. On leaving high school, he joined a local Kansas newspaper as a trainee reporter. He went to become foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star and used his extraordinary experiences in Europe and later Cuba to inform his writing. His short

    21、novel The Old Man and the Sea, about the three- day epic struggle between an elderly fisherman and the biggest fish he had ever caught, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953. He would later go on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. But man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed but no

    22、t defeated. -Ernest Hemingway Arthur Conan Doyle(1859-1930) was a Scottish author, best known for his Sherlock Holmes stories. Doyle trained as a doctor initially, though several efforts to establish himself in the practice of medicine all ended in failure. By contrast, after a rough start, his inno

    23、vative crime fiction featuring Sherlock Holmes became a great success. Although the public adored Sherlock Holmes, Doyle himself felt that the character was a distraction from his other literary ambitions, which included historical novels, plays, poems, and academic papers. None of Doyles other writ

    24、ing ever achieved close to the success of the Holmes material, however. Holmes and his assistant, Dr Watson, remain popular characters across the world today. What was Doyles main writing ambition? By contrast, the young Arthur Conan Doyle , born in Scotland in 1819, had originally worked as a docto

    25、r. But Doyles main ambition was to become a writer of historical novels. Although some of his historical novels were published , their success was nothing compared to the stories of his fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, which he is still best known for to this day. Sherlock Holmes Interestingly,

    26、 Doyle wrote some of his early Holmes stories while he was waiting for patients in his medical practice in London. After Sherlock Holmes made him a household name, Doyle gave up medicine and devoted himself entirely to writing. Why was Doyle disappointed with the success of his Holmes stories? He st

    27、ill longed to become known for his historical novels amongst other academic works. The public, however, couldnt get enough of Sherlock Holmes. In desperation, Doyle killed off the famous detective in a novel published in 1893 so that he could focus on his “serious”writing. However, fans of Holmes we

    28、re so angry that Doyle, under immense pressure, was forced to bring Holmes back from the dead. Doyles many historical novels , plays, poems and academic papers have remained largely forgotten, but Sherlock Holmes has been entertaining readers for well over a century. What can you do when faced with

    29、uncertainty about the future? Though both of these men were ultimately successful, their paths to success were very different, their futures not necessarily turning out exactly as they planned.
