Unit 3 Unit 3 Getting along with others To understand why Amy had a problem with her best friend To know what advice Cindy and David offered To learn how to maintain friendships in daily lives 1. Do you think there are “friends for life”? why or why not? 2. Would you turn to online communities for advice about maintaining friendships? Why or why not? 3. What will life be like if you have no friends? Watch and think: Read the video script above and answer the questions. I have no friends Some people say I have no friends when theyre complaining about the friends that they do have. Its just a placeholder (托辞托辞) for my friends are too busy to hang out right now or it can also be used to indicate (表明表明) the quality of someones friendship, like when youre in middle school and hating yourself and the world and you just desperately want to hang out with someone who hates the same thing as you. In this instance I have no friends means my friends dont really connect with the situation Im dealing with. Question 1 Why does the speaker have no friends? Because her friends are too busy to hang out with her and they cannot really connect with the situation he is dealing with. Watch the later part: When I say I have no friends, I mean it quite literally (字面上字面上). I can easily go an entire week and only receive text from mom. Thats how many friends I have. You might feel a little uncomfortable when I say I have no friends but why is that? For a long time I was ashamed of my friend lessness and I never acknowledged it although I suspect the people knew, and shame really refers to a feeling about who you are as a person. So it was distressing (令人痛苦的令人痛苦的) to grapple (努力克服努力克服) with what I saw as a defect ( 缺陷缺陷) in my character. I further rationalized (使更合理使更合理) that if I didnt acknowledge it that meant I didnt have to deal with it or my longtime underlying (隐藏的隐藏的) problems, but none of that is true. It is true that my lack of friends doesnt reflect my inherent (原原 本的本的) value but nonetheless my admission is pretty taboo (禁忌禁忌). I think we feel uncomfortable with my admission because we share the implicit (未言明未言明的的) belief that friends enrich the quality of our lives. Not having friends may be a marker of an unfulfilled life and it makes us sad to see people living contrary to their wellbeing. Question 2 & 3 How did the speaker feel about her lack of friends? She felt ashamed. Generally speaking, what friends can benefit us? Friends can enrich our lives. So the speaker has a problem with her friends. Her friendship is on the rocks. Read Amys problem with her best friend Jenny and two replies. Please advise! What does “on the rocks” mean? having difficulties and likely to fail soon 1. Whats Paragraph 1 mainly about? A.
