Just say, “Now Ive finally thrown this brick to make room for that gem Im about to read next.” Usually, I quit reading three or four book

    9、s to find a book I can read to the end. 9 You may be wondering why I dont read e-books, saving myself all the time and effort required to bring books in and out of the house. In an age when our books, films, and photographs are all going digital, there is something popular about having a growing col

    10、lection of books in the home. Perhaps there is a nice change in your mind while youre reading physical books. 10 ARead physical books. BTry to read as much as you can. CChange your mind about quitting. DDo you have time to read 1,000 new books a week? E.Youd better find out the most popular reading

    11、lists first. F.And it can be a welcome change to hold a physical book in your hands. G.With a bit of digging you can easily find the one that totally satisfies you. Teenage depression (抑郁症) isnt just a bad mood. Its a serious problem that affects every aspect of a teens life. 11 Here are some ways o

    12、f dealing with your depression. Try not to isolate (使孤立) yourself 12 Just getting out of bed in the morning can be difficult, but isolating yourself only makes things worse.     16、nd celebration for Mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings, and crayon scribbled I Love You. 16 During the 1600s, England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday. Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40-day period leading up to Easter), Mothering Sunday honored the mothers of

During this time many of the Englands poor people worked as servants for the wealthy. 17On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. 18 As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to hon

    18、or the Mother Church-the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. 19 While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mothers Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countrie

    19、s such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey,Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May. Dont forget to tell our mothers how much we love and appreciate them. 20Go ahead! Just do that! AMothers are so great that everyone should respect them from now on. BThe ear

    20、liest Mothers Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the mother of gods. CPeople began honoring their mothers as well as the church. DAs most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers.

    21、E.A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch. 4 F.Its never too late to do that! G.It is not important that Mothers Day is at different times throughout the year. Life on Mars: Is it really possible? Now that Curiosity is beaming back Earth-like pic

    26、ght to welcome the challenges. The more challenges we overcome now, the more prepared we will be for moving out of our solar system and into the grand, universal adventure that is ahead of us.     27、 plants. DHowever, all kinds of other interesting things will be happening. E.But these are already issues for astronauts living on the International Space Station. F.They do not have the stabilizing effect on the spin of the planet like the moon has upon Earth. G.Mars has Earth-like seasons and the

    28、 planet surface is abundant in minerals essential for plant 5 growth. Chinese culture values family bonds(纽带) very much. Family members dont just gather during the holidays. In fact, they often live under one roof all year round. 26Family in the East and West are very different from each other. In m

    29、ost East Asian cultures, extended families (大家庭) are common. 27 According to a survey, 90 percent of children in Shanghai and 70 percent of children in Beijing were cared for by their grandparents. Chinese people believe that “ a grandparent is a treasure to their family”. In many Western countries,

    30、 most families are nuclear families(小家庭) .These are made up of children and their parents. Besides, the duties parents have toward their children can also be different. 28Its normal for parents to pay for their childrens college, help them find a job, or buy them an apartment. Chinese adults also co

    31、nsider their parents opinions when making major life decisions. In most Western countries, however, kids usually move out of the house after they turn eighteen. 29If they choose to keep living with their parents after becoming an adult, it can be seen as a failure on their part. While the East cares

    32、 more about close family bonds, the West values privacy (隐私)and independence. 30Families will always be a source of love, warmth, and care for people around the world. ABut in the end, east or westhome is best. BBut different cultures have different family values. CNuclear families are the most comm

    33、on type in China. DBoth Easterners and Westerners value quality family time. E.These families have three or even four generations living together. F.In China, many parents look after their children all the way into adulthood. G.Many young people need to take out loans and work part - time jobs to pa

    34、y for college. Rejection doesnt have to be about the big stuff like not getting into your top college. Everyday situations can lead to feelings of rejection, too, like if your joke didnt get a laugh, if no one remembered to save you a seat at the lunch table, or if the person you really like talks t

    35、o everyone but you. Rejection hurts. But its impossible to avoid it altogether. The only thing we 6 should do is to learn to handle it. 31. So how can you build that ability? Be HonestAbout Your Feelings If you get rejected, admit how intense your feelings are. Dont try to brush off the hurt or pret

    36、end its not painful. Then, move on to name what youre feeling. For example: “I feel really disappointed that I didnt get chosen for the school play. I wanted it so badly and I tried so hard. I feel left out because my friends made it and I didnt.” 32. Examine Your Thought Soundtrack When you are rej

    37、ected, its natural to wonder, “Why did this happen?” When you give yourself an explanation, be careful to stick to the facts. Tell yourself: “I got turned down for prom because the person didnt want to go with me.” Dont tell yourself: “I got turned down because Im not attractive” or “Im such a loser

    38、.” 33 . Next time, if put-down thoughts start creeping into your mind, shut them down. 34 Arejection is chance to consider if there are things we can work on. Its OK to think about whether theres room for improvement or if your goals were higher than your skills. 35. But if you approach it right, it

    39、 could help nudge you in a direction that turns out to be the perfect fit for your talents, personality, and all the really great things that make you who you are. AAcknowledging feelings helps you move beyond painful emotions. BThis kind of thinking crowds out hope and a belief in ourselves. CBe Pa

    40、tient When Rejected. DDwelling on the negative feelings can feel like living the experience over and over again. E.Sometimes a rejection is a harsh reality check. F.The better we get at dealing with rejection, the less it affects us. G.Use Rejection to YourAdvantage. Parents often say that they dont

    41、 mind what their children do in life just as long as they are happy. Happiness and pleasure are almost universally seen as among the most precious human goods.36 Philosopher Jeremy Bentham believed that all sources of pleasure are of equal quality, but John Stuart Mill disagreed. Mill argued for a d

    42、ifference between higher and lower pleasure.37Lower pleasure, in contrast, requires mere (仅仅的;纯粹的) senses. The entire debate assumes a clear divide between the physical and the mental.38What will it 7 mean for our ideas about pleasure? 39Food is usually considered to be the lower pleasure.All animal

    43、s eat, using the senses of smell and taste. It doesnt require any complex cognition (认知) to conclude that something is delicious. However, these people failed to appreciate something that the French food writer Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin captured. That is, Animals feed; man eats; only the man of

    44、intellect(才智) knows how to eat. Eating shows that the difference between higher pleasure and lower pleasure is not what you enjoy but how you enjoy it.40 Preparing it using the powers of reflection and attention turns it into a higher pleasure. AThe dining table is a good place to start. BWolfing do

    45、wn your food is a lower kind of pleasure. CWhats the real difference between high and low pleasure? DWhat happens if the physical and the mental cannot be separated? E.All philosophers believed that cookery could never be a form of art. F.Higher pleasure depends on human abilities such as self-aware

    46、ness or language use. G.However, disagreements will be caused about whether some forms of pleasure are better than others. You know that overnight success usually takes at least 10 years? One man said, “My overnight success was the longest night of my life, I spent many days and nights just getting

    47、there.”41Many people are waiting for their ship to come in-when theyve not even sent it out of the harbor(海港). You see, winners simply do what losers dont want to do. 42 Success is mostly just hanging on after others have let go! So the most important trip youll make is when you go the extra mile. M

    48、any people who have failed do not know how close they are to success when they give up. 43One guy said, “The secret to success is to start from doing and to keep on doing.” So dont give up because your trying times are hard. 44 If we keep doing, we can gain almost anything we want.
