The students have already learnt about verbs in the previous lessons. Verbs: They are words or doing words. For example: row, play, dance, watch, etc. ed: at the end of the verb means it happened in the past Teacher: Min Kang 教具、学具准备 Material/Resources A worksheet for sorting ed sounds While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also use the textbook where required. Chalks, board, markers, textbook, charts Class duration :40 minutes Lesson Plan-Class instruction Warm Up(5 minutes): Sing a phonics song together Introduction: T: Today we are going to practice pronouncing past tense sounds using regular verbs ending in “-ed”. For regular verbs, we usually add “-ed” to the end of the verb to make it past tense. The spelling is easy because you just add “-ed” but the pronunciation can be a little tricky. T: Now listen to the three verbs below for the three different sounds of ed. watched planned started Did you here the difference? Ss: answer T: listen again to the pronunciation of the verbs what sound do you hear? Ss: T: Thats right its the /t/ /d/ and /id/ sounds Demonstration of Understanding The reasons why the past tense of verbs in English with the ed ending are pronounced in three different ways-/ t/,/ d/ or /id/. If I say the past tense verb walked as in I walked away what is the last sound that you hear in the verb walked? The ed verb ending sounds like a /t/ even though it ends in the letter D. What do you hear when I say smelled as in It smelled bad? The ed verb ending sounds like a /d/ and when I say visited as in I visited New York City how did I pronounce that ed ending? Visited the ed verb ending sounds like it visited. Intro why the sound changes? (需要中文解释一遍) Place your fingertips on the front of your neck and pronounce the following words. What do you feel on your fingers when you say the underline sound “ vow”fake” “zebra” “ snake”? When we pronounce voiced sounds our vocal cords vibrate when we say those sounds /v/ /z/ did you feel the vibration? When we pronounce voiceless sounds our vocal cords do not vibrate /f/ /s/ this vibration or lack of vibration then carries forward to the following sound in the word therefore this vibration or lack of vibration explains why we pronounce the past tense of verbs in three voiced or voiceless ways -/t/ /d/ or /id/。 Explain that: /t/ final sound : verbs ending in voiceless sounds/p/ /k/th/ /f/ /s/ /sh/ /ch/ /d/ final sound: verbs ending in the voiced sounds like /b/ /g/ /v/ /z/ /m/ /n/ etc. /id/ final sound: verbs ending with /t/ and /d/ In-Class Exercises( 10-15 minutes)- after the instructional part of the lesso, I then give my students time in class to practice what they just learned. I like to give them exercises to do in pairs, and also as a large group. Ive found that variety helps keep them interested. Activity one: sort the “ robot man” Each students have their own handout and work in four to practice the ed pronunciation. Teacher go around and see if anyone need help. Can students come to the stage and put the ed words in the right place. Activity two: Open the book and read after the video. Play games-大转盘 & 快速抢答 Activity three: T: Now lets try to read our mini book together. Ss: I can read -ed words Sum up/ Closure: Review the 3 rules to students again. Ask if they have any questions.
