After watching, ask the students: What can you learn about pandas from the video? Step 2 Pre-reading Can you say something more about pandas? Use the words in 2a to help you. (Listen carefully, you cant repeat others sentences.) Step 3 While reading 1. Scanning Scan the passage and find out what these numbers mean. Before reading, present the reading strategy: Scanning. It means moving your eyes quickly down the passage to find specific information. Check the answers. 10- Adult pandas eat about 10 kilos of bamboo a day. 12- Adult pandas spend more than 12 hours a day eating. 300- 300 pandas or so live in zoos or research centers in China and other countries. 2000- Scientists say there are fewer than 2000 pandas living in the forests. 2. Careful reading Read the passage carefully and find the answers to the questions. What is Lin Weis job? What do the baby pandas have for breakfast? Why are pandas endangered? What does the education program in Chengdu do ? Why are scientists doing research? Work in pairs and discuss the questions to the answers complete. 3. Third reading Read again and complete the sentences using the words and phrases from the passage. While checking, pay attention to the expressions with the same meaning. 4. Fourth reading Read the whole passage carefully and try to remember as much information about pandas as possible. If you have any difficulty, ask the teacher for help. After reading, complete the mind map. If you can, try not to look at your book. Lets see how much you have got about pandas. Step 4 Discussion Emotional elevation 1. We know pandas are in danger. So we need to protect them. What other ways do you think children can help to save the pandas? More ways to protect giant pandas: Build more reserves(保护区) Stop cutting down trees Make some posters and put them up or hand out notices to let people know. Volunteer to help plant more bamboo trees and protect pandas living environment. Step 5 Emotional elevation Besides pandas, there are also many other animals in danger in the world, so we should: Love animals, Love the environment, Love the world. Step 6 Homework Choose one of the endangered animals and write about it. The passage should include: 1. The basic situation of the animals. 2. The reasons that they are endangered. 3.
