They need to work in a group of 4 to tell both the English phrases and Chinese meanings. (3) Practice: Do 4a, check answers and discuss in the group. 3. Learn more about infinitives. (1) As objects. Ask: The old man wants to go to Beijing to be a volunteer. What do you want to do? Students may answer like: I want to get good grades/ to study hard, ect. Tell them the infinitives here “to get”and “to study” are used as objects. Ask them to think more about words that can be put in front of “to do” (would like/volunteer/hope to do sth. ) (2) As objects complements Ask: What do your parents want you to do? Students may answer like: They want me to get good grades/ to study harder/not to play with the smart phones, ect. Tell them the infinitives here “to get”, “to study” “not to play “are used as objects complements. Ask them to think more about words that can be put in front of “sb. to do” (help/would like /want/tell sb. to do sth. ) (3) As adverbials Ask: Why do you study hard? Students may answer like: I study hard to get good grades/ to go to a good high school, ect. Explain to them the infinitives here “to get”, “to go” are used as adverbials. (4 ) Group work Ask students to find more verbs that can be in front of “to do/ sb. to do/ Why do you learn English” and put verbs in the chart.
