11、t the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he landed a summer job as an engineer at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. Finally, Massimino applied for (申请) the astronaut training program. After his interview, he found out that he had made it into the top 10% of applicants. Unfortunately,Mas
12、simino was unsuccessful because of his bad eyesight (视力). He wanted to re- apply, so he did something to correct his eyesight. His second application failed because he used references (推荐 信) from people who didnt know him well. Massimino was then refused a third time, again because of his eyesight.
13、“When you get refused that many times from NASA, it really teaches you something. As long as you keep trying, there is always a chance, ” Massimino said. He got in touch with the NASA officers and was told that he could re- apply if he could correct his eyesight. Massimino then went through several
14、months of training for his eyes. In May 1996, after his fourth try he was finally chosen to be a NASA astronaut. He went on to travel on two space flights, in 2002 and 2009. Massimino was the first person ever to send a tweet (a post on Twitter) from space, writing in part: “I am feeling great, work
15、ing hard, & enjoying the magnificent views.” His team also set a team record for the number of hours spacewalking on a single space flight.
