This unit is mainly about the stories. The students will master the ways to tell the stories with the past form and learn some lessons from them. I can improve students skills of reading and understanding the passage. Now, I will explain the lesson from the following aspects. First, lets focus on the analysis of teaching content. The lesson is a new one of unit 2. It is a story. The topic is The Tortoise and the Rabbit. Most of the students know the story in Chinese. So it can help students to understand the story in English easily. Second, I want to say something about my students. Our students are in Grade 6. They have some basic English background knowledge, so in the class, I should communicate more with them. Its not difficult for them to understand, and use the language. Third, According to this, I set the following aims. 1. Knowledge Skills: (1) Students can read, and write the past form of some important verbs in this story. (2) Students can read and understand the key phrases. For example: have a race, wake up, jump up, learn a lesson. 2. Ability Skills: (1) Students can read and understand the story well. (2) Students can retell the story with the key words. 3. Emotion Skills: By the end of the story, the students should learn a lesson. That is “Its good to run fast, but its better to win the race.” 4. Important points: (1) The students can read and write the past form of some important verbs of this story. (2) The students can read and understand the story well. 5. Difficult points: Its more difficult for the students to retell the story with some key words. Fourth, I want to say my teaching methods. In this lesson, I will mainly use “Task-based teaching method, communicative language teaching method, TPR, pair-work, group-work, competition and cooperation teaching methods. Fifth, lets focus on the teaching steps. I will finish the class in six steps. Step I. Greetings and warming-up After greeting with the students, I will begin the lesson with a game. At first I choose a student and let the student invite another one in the classroom. When I show a verb on the screen, these two students will say the past form at the same time. I will say, “ Please say the past form! Are you ready? One, Two, go!” Who can say it correctly and more quickly, he/she is a winner. The winner will choose a new student and go on the game. The loser game over. At last we will choose the best one and give him/her a sticker. Here I let the students evaluate in pairs and by themselves. Purpose: The purpose is to let the students recall the past form of the verbs in the story. so the students will understand the story easily. Step II, Preparation In this step, I design a competition between boys and girls. First, I choose a girl and a boy to come to the front and face to the students, then I show some verbs and verb phrases on the screen. I say to other girls, “Girls, please look and act but dont say it out, she will guess what it is. Are you ready? Lets go! ”The boys do as the same way. Girls and boys act and guess in turns. Here, I use White Board to judge boys and girls. The girls win, I give them a tortoise. The boys win, I give them a hare. At last, who guesses more, who is a winner. Next, I let the students say the past form of these verbs. At the end of the task, I show the past form ran , students say the original word run. I go on asking What animals can run? Its easy for the students to say many animals, if they say “The hare!” I will say.,“ Yes! Look, the hare is coming! Wow! Here comes the tortoise ,too! They bring a story the Tortoise and the Rabbit. Boys and girls, do you know this story? Can you say anything about it?” The students say something with their own words. Purpose: According to this activity, its easy for me to arouse the students interest of learning this story. I can also let all the students take part in my class. And I can show the topic easily and naturally. Also, the students will know the story in general in their own ideas. Step III, Presentation I divide the lesson into six parts. And I have different tasks for different parts. Before the story, I ask the students to describe the tortoise and the hare according to the cartoon on the screen. It can make students realize these two animals in general. Part1: At first, I tell the story like this, “One day, the sun was hot and big. A tortoise was walking down a road. He was walking very slowly. Suddenly, a hare saw him and laughed “Ha, ha! You are so slow!” Then I stop the story and ask a question, “Boys and girls, what did the tortoise say, do you know?” The students think about it and say freely. And then I play the tape. So the students will know what the tortoise said. There is a new word “hurry”, I will invite a student to act it out. TPR is more interesting and easy for the students to learn a new verb. Purpose: I think its important for me to give chances for the students to think and communicate more with their own thinking and language. Second, I ask, “What happens next between the tortoise and the rabbit?” I go on playing the tape, the students only listen and answer my question, “What are they going to do?” Purpose: The purpose is to develop the students skills of listening and understanding. Third, I let the students act part 1 out in group in front of the class. The students will choose the best one. In this part, the students evaluate in groups. Part2: First, I show picture 3 ,the students look and say something about it. Purpose: In order to improve the students skills of talking about the pictures. I design it. It is good for students to think and study easily. Second, I show picture 4. Students talk about it. Then I hand out the paper with the sentences, the students read and number them in groups. At last, A volunteer will come to the front and check the answers on the screen. In this part I let the students evaluate by themselves. Because they are the hosts in the class, the teacher is only a guider. Purpose: It can develop students skills of reading and understanding. And let students know cooperation is a good way to share. That is Two heads are better than one! Part3, In this part, the students read it and finish the task: When the rabbit slept, what did the tortoise do and what didnt the tortoise do? Here I praise or encourage my students sincerely in time. Purpose: It is good for the students to choose the key information from the lesson and its a training of thinking. Part4: This part is the end of the story. I pick out some important verbs, the students read and choose the right words ,then fill in the blanks. It can check the students understanding about it. Part5: In order to develop the students skill about summary, I ask students to think about the lesson that the hare learned and say it out freely. Then they listen to the tape and learn the lesson in the book. Part6: Retell the story I give the key words on the screen, the students try to retell the story with these words. (Explain laugh at with another English sentence)At last I will give another way to retell the story quickly. Purpose: I think my students should learn to express the same thing in a different way. Its good for their future English learning. Step V: Extension 1. The rabbit learned a lesson: Slow and steady wins a race. 2.After learning the lesson of this story, I show other two lessons in their life. For example: Its good to have a clever head, its better to study hard. Its good to have more money, its better to live happily. Purpose: Its a good way to give emotional education to the students. Step VI: Exercise At last, I show some exercises about past form to the students. Purpose: This part is necessary for the students to learn how to use past form. For example: Why and How? Look, this is my Blackboard Design. Sixth, I will say something about my teaching reflection In my English class, I mainly used Task-based method to teach this story. I can practice students listening, speaking, reading, writing ,thinking and acting,.I try my best to make these tasks more interesting and effective. And during the teaching procedure, I use the questions to connect different parts together. Of course, all the questions should be asked more and more deeply. In my class, I use various evaluation to judge the students. Otherwise, I always praise or encourage my students sincerely in particular in time. I think its a long time for the students to learn English, Study hard, they will be better and better. This is my Teaching Design about The tortoise and the Rabbit.
